As the Design Manager and Creative Director for the Microsoft Store on Windows, I led a comprehensive redesign to address the platform's outdated user interface and suboptimal user experience and lack of available content across apps, games, entertainment and subscription services. In 2021, our team initiated a significant overhaul to enhance usability and align with modern digital retail standards.
Collaborated with talented engineering partners to bring stunning animations and interactions to life, showcasing the power of strong collaboration and a shared vision for innovation.
Identifying Challenges and Setting Objectives
We began by engaging with stakeholders to understand key priorities: rich curation, real-time feedback on merchandising decisions, a culture of experimentation, personalization, and honoring partnerships. Recognizing that existing research was outdated, we conducted a thorough audit of the Store, uncovering the need for a more intuitive navigation system, improved search functionality, and a personalized user experience.
Guiding Principles and Design Process
Our design process was anchored by four core principles: Build Trust, Make it Personal, Curate with Purpose, and Create Delight. These principles informed the development of experience goals and core scenarios tailored to Microsoft Store customers. We even refreshed the logo system, adopting rounder geometry to align with the new design language of Windows 11.
Execution and Impact
With a dedicated team of approximately five designers and researchers, we collaborated closely with Product Management and Engineering, conducting over 100 experiments to refine the Store's features and aesthetics. Our efforts culminated in a redesigned Microsoft Store that now reaches over 1 billion devices worldwide, significantly enhancing user engagement and satisfaction.
This project exemplifies the impact of strategic design leadership and cross-functional collaboration in revitalizing a digital platform to meet contemporary user expectations.
